Chaos often represents something really bad in mythological texts, but also how things were in the beginning. The ancient spooks may have written it that way because chaos puns with χαιος chaios which means “truth” — the spooks’ worst enemy!

Greek chaos = chasm, darkness; chaios = genuine, true

χάος chaos : chaos, the first state of the universe; the nether abyss, infinite darkness — Ancient Greek (LSJ.gr)

χάιος chaios : genuine, true, good — Ancient Greek (LSJ.gr)
