Colluthus: Rape of Helen

🏷  Greek text interlinear · text   —   by Gerry · May 2026 · 3986 words

The poem Rape of Helen by Colluthus is about the only surviving lengthy Greek text about the famous Capture of Helen by the Trojans. This encrypts the actual “Capture of the Hellenes by the Tyrians”, a pun that works in almost all languages!

Introduction

The short snippet that I have decrypted narrates the famous 3 choices of the Trojan prince Paris (also called Alexander) about how to capture Helen. They encrypt the 3 choices of the Tyrian princes about how to capture the Hellenes, i.e. the Greeks:

Unsurprisigly, secrecy wins hands-down. Even now, 1000s of years after the fact, the Europeans still don’t know their entire civilization was founded by Phoenician overlords from the Middle East.

(Generally, most classical authors state they’re unsure whether “Helen” was captured by seduction or violence. So in reality, the conquest of Greece probably involved a little bit of both.)

How to read this

Seduction of the Hellenes

Fierce ruling makes rulers destroyers and the hunters of commoners.
