Great Hymn to Aten
The great hymn to Aten is an Egyptian poem that celebrates the sun disc Aten as the creator of life, and describes in vivid detail the sunrise over the Egyptian riverlands, its inhabitants starting the day, and the forming of new life. Sadly, it’s also yet another pun-encrypted text, where a slightly different reading reveals how the Egyptian elites celebrate secrecy & obscurity, and the deceiving of their own subjects. The main pun is jtn “sun disc” punning with jtnw “secrecy” & “obscurity”.
Introduction
The Great Hymn to Aten was written around the reign of pharaoh Akhenaten, 1353–1336 BC, who instituted worship of the sun disc Aten. The hymn is found on a wall in the tomb of the pharaoh Ay, who was a high-level courtier under Akhenaten, and later became ruler himself.
The text describes the sunrise over Egypt, with many details that picture the beauty of the landscape and its inhabitants:
- During the night when the sun is absent, lions & snakes roam the lands. 🡻
- When the sun rises, people get up, wash & dress themselves, and praise the day. 🡻
- Cattle start to graze, trees & plants are in blossom. 🡻
- Birds, boats & fish become active along the river. 🡻
- Through the power of creation, babies come to life within the womb, 🡻 and chicks within the egg. 🡻
- The Nile provides for the wetlands, 🡻 and rain from the heavens provides for the dry lands. 🡻 The sun shines for all. 🡻
Sadly, once again, this text has been encrypted to have a double-meaning. And once again, the secret content is about secrecy: In Egyptian, the jtn “sun disc” puns with jtnw “secrecy” & “obscurity”. So the text is actually a hymn to aristocratic secrecy. The rulers literally say that their disguises allow them to steal their subject’s wealth from under their noses!
These are the most important giveaways in the literal text:
- At the beginning of column 3, the literal text says that the sun disc “subdues the lands for his son”, the king. That sounds very strange. But jtn “sun disc” puns with jtnw “secrecy”, and tȝ “land” puns with twȝ “inferiors”, so the encrypted phrase makes sense: Secret deception subdues the inferiors, for the rulers!
- At the end of column 3, the literal text says about sleeping people: “When someone steals their possessions from under their heads, they don’t even notice.” That’s not what would come to mind when writing a hymn to the sun. It perfectly fits a hymn to deception, however: Organized deception was developed to enable graft by the elites, i.e. stealing people’s wealth “from right under their noses, without them noticing”, because they’ve been “put to sleep” mentally.
- In column 5, the text tells how “everyone does his work”, and that “the cattle is content”. It doesn’t need punnery to see that this is what the rulers want to achieve through their deception: People working and being content, unaware they’re constantly robbed & exploited.
- The text in column 6 describes the wonder of life, how children are created inside the mother’s womb. However, the text then says that the sun “stops the baby’s crying”. But unborn & newborn are not really concerned with the sun. Only the encrypted text makes sense here: Deception “creates humans”, i.e. fake personas, and makes people stop complaining.
- In column 7, the text stresses that many of creation’s wonders are “hidden from sight”. This is technically true, but I found it suspicious that they’d emphasize this, since sunlight is about visible things. This was the passage that made me try and decrypt the text.
- In column 11, the text says that the sun made “millions of shapes”, but then proceeds to list man-made structures, like cities & villages. This hints at the deceptive rulers creating “millions of shapes” to hide behind.
All of the encryptions are homonym puns, so in this text, only the reading counts and you don’t even have to understand the glyphs to decipher it. Overall, it’s very remarkable how similar the pun-words are in this text. When I studied Egyptian symbolism, I found a lot more fuzzy puns, and anagrams. But here, it’s often even the same word in a different meaning, or a slightly different grammar form. Often, the pun-words are even written with the same bilateral glyphs. These are some of the most important puns:
- The eponymous jtn “sun disc” (Aten) puns with jtnw “secrecy” & “obscurity”. The words may even be related, because a disc “shields”. 🡻
- The sun’s stwt “rays” pun with stwt “resemblance”, probably meant here as “disguise”. 🡻
- The jȝbt “east” & jmnt “west” where the sun rises & sets pun with jȝbwt “appearance” & jmnt “hiding”. The words are obviously related, because the sun also appears & hides in these directions. 🡻
- The ȝḫt “horizon” puns with ȝḫt “glory”. Probably also related, through the beauty of the sunrise. 🡻
- The tȝ “land” that the elites rule over puns with the twȝ “inferiors” that the elites rule over. The word is generally written with 𓀢 a worshiping or pleading man. 🡻
- The ṯȝ / ṯȝt “fledgling” in its egg shell puns with a ṯȝt / ṯȝ “governor” in his figurative shell. Both words were even written in abbreviated form with 𓅷 a single fledgling glyph. 🡻
- When birds are called pȝyt “flying ones”, they pun with pˤt “patricians”. 🡻 When called ḫnnt “poultry”, they pun with ḫnty “superiors”. 🡻 When called ȝpd “birds”, they pun with ˤbd “servants” (a Semitic loanword). 🡻
- The ḥˤpy “Nile” (Hapi) puns with ḥȝp “concealment”. 🡻
- The ˤnḫ “life” (Ankh) puns with jnḥ “enveloping”. The words are likely related, through “binding”, since 𓋹 the ankh symbol is a “bound” sandal strap, and life is the force that “binds” the soul to the body. 🡻

No punnery is needed here. The literal text says about the sleeping people: “When someone steals their possessions while they are under their heads, they don’t even notice.”
That is also true of graft by the elites, if shielded by propaganda & deception. Spookery, i.e. organized deception, was invented to allow the elites to perpetually & eternally steal everything from their subjects, without them even noticing.
This sentence is proof that the Great Hymn to Aten is encrypted: That sunlight is preventing theft would not be the first thing that comes to mind when preising the sun and creation. It’s also not true: Unlike the nocturnal animals in the next paragraph, literal human thieves are also impeded by darkness. When they steal at night, it’s only because most humans are sleeping then, and not because humans couldn’t notice things when it’s dark.
