Ovid: Metamorphoses
The Metamorphoses by Ovid are officially a history of the world, and secretly a pun-encrypted history of organized deception: In the beginning, there was only truth, and the aristocracy ruled openly & brutally. Then they invented their total deception about everything — the titular metamorphoses!
Introduction
The epic Metamorphoses by Roman poet Ovidius Naso is a gargantuan Latin poem, collected into 15 books. It is supposed to tell the entirety of history, from the creation of the world to Julius Caesar. But all except the last 2 chapters are actually Greek myths, retold in Latin. The title Metamorphoses means “transformations”, which is also odd, because most of the myths are not about transformations at all.
Obviously, this is yet another pun-encrypted story. The word metamorphoses doesn’t even need encryption, because to the spook overlords, human history is just an endless chain of them morphing & transforming into ever new disguises, to conceal their ultra-corrupt rule from the subjects. The introduction of the story mirrors the Book of Genesis and Sumerian myths: In the beginning, there was only truth. The aristocracy already had power, but showed their true oppressive face, and used armed brutality to crush dissent. But then they invented systematic deception — the titular metamorphoses — to cover it all up! The rest is fake history, with the truth secretly told by Ovid’s Metamorphoses and other encrypted stories.
Ovid’s encryption style is somewhat interesting, as he writes in Latin about Greek gods & myths, and very often recycles Greek puns. But since the Roman elites were well-read in Greek, his readers would likely understand them all. (Other Latin works occasionally use Greek puns as well.)
How to read this
