Tacitus: History of the Jews
One odd part of the Histories by Tacitus is about the History of the Jews. It doesn’t conform at all to the Bible and is pretty pejorative. The encrypted version is even worse: It tells how the corrupt rulers took an existing minority and perverted them further, to recruit agents against the rebelling majority.
Introduction
In the middle of Tactitus’ Histories is a weird section that tells a very unflattering history of the Jews: Even in the official version, Tacitus doesn’t mention the Biblical version. Instead, he speculates that they were an existing minority, and the rulers was advised to cast them out of society during a plague. Their own leader then intentionally altered their religion even further, so that their laws were opposite to everyone else’s, to isolate and more easily rule them.
The encrypted story is similar, but worse: The crisis is not a plague, but disobedience & rebellion of the majority population, and the ruler is advised to take a minority and use them as spies. And the leader of the Jews doesn’t manipulate them for his personal advantage, but for the government.
Interestingly, Tacitus’ work seems to be the only text where the word “Jews” doesn’t encrypt anything else, but simply means the Jews. It is a confirmation to more heavily encrypted texts like Shekalim and Josephus, which describe the artificial creation of minorities, without naming the Jews explicitly.
