Terumot
The Talmud chapter Terumot is officially gift-offerings to priests. But trwmt “gift-offering” puns with trmyt “hoax”, so the chapter is really about the large-scale hoaxes that are staged by the government against any non-aristocratic party, even their own citizens. These hoaxes are the self-proclaimed privilege of the nobility. They’re still run today, because that nobility still rules today.
Introduction
The Terumot tractate is about the Terumah, a mandatory gift-offering of fruits & produce from the faithfuls to the priests, which is supposed to sustain them. Tithing to priests seems relatively normal. But as usual, the Talmud distorts a simple custom into a nauseating array of impossible-to-comprehend stipulations.
And as usual, the reason is pun-encryption: trwmt “gift-offering” puns with trmyt “hoax”. (The roots are rwm “take up” versus rmy “deception”, both T-prefixed and T-suffixed here.) The many strange rules about which produce is accepted as a gift-offering, they’re really rules about who is accepted to run hoaxes against whom.
A hoax is here used in the sense of a large-scale organized deception. We still have these today, as our news headlines are overflowing with fake terror attacks, fake shootings, fake murders and fake court cases. This despicable custom dates back to ancient times, when the corrupt aristocracy at some point considered the faking of reality to be their rightful privilege.
Generally, according to the ancient laws, only aristocrats are allowed to run hoaxes. Commoners are only allowed to run hoaxes once they’re made secret agents.
And in theory, the secret elites are also restricted: They’re not allowed to run hoaxes against each other, and they shouldn’t run them just for profiteering. But even the ancient texts end all such rules with the phrase: “but if they still do it, it’s accepted”. So apparently, then as now, the most powerful rulers regularly broke all rules, even their own. We can still see that today, where it seems that almost all hoaxes are illegally run mainly for profit, e.g. to increase military & police state budgets, to raise worldwide prices, even for simple insurance fraud.
I wished they’d also break the other rules, and run hoaxes against each other more often. Sadly, they mostly keep the iron law that says it’s forbidden to unmask any of them and show his true face through a hoax. But they break even this law occasionally. And those few instances enabled people like Miles to build up our knowledge of them. That, and their general sloppiness & idiocy.
